OPEN LEARNING: POWER SYSTEM PROTECTION
Every electricity company should be aware of the enormous financial and business importance of having engineers trained in all aspects of protecting the power system. AFAQ-ETA, which is strongly supported by all UK based electricity companies, has two important distance learning courses in Power System Protection.
T

he Power System Protection volumes remain the international authoritative text on the subject, and whilst the course is demanding, it offers a substantial development opportunity to electrical engineers, putting them in touch through the tutorial system with expert practitioners in power companies. There are a significant and growing number of overseas utilities using the course including New Zealand, Australia, Africa , South East Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
The Premier Course has five important more recent units on Digital Technology, Digital Signal Processing, Digital Communications and Fibre Optics, Numeric Protection and Co-ordinated Control. This significant enhancement to the course was the work of a PSP Review Group, which included representatives from National Grid Transco, NEDL,
Central Networks, United Utilities and the Electricity Association. The units
have been edited by Dr Phil Moore from the University of Bath.
The duration of the course is 36 months, and students who have not
completed within this time-frame will be required to pay an admin fee per
module submitted after this time.

side of this page.
The course enrolment fee for UK candidates is currently £1290 + VAT and £1390 for overseas candidates. Students who have previously
completed the Introduction to the Protection of Transmission and Distribution
Course can enrol on this course at a reduced rate.

AFAQ-ETA is pleased to offer the Introduction to the Protection of Transmission and Distribution Systems Correspondence Course.
This course is intended for any staff whose work puts them into situations where knowledge of protection is an issue. Unlike the Premier Power System Protection course this open learning material is written with a minimum of mathematical treatment and adopts a modern format. It still aims to be a recognised authority in introducing power system protection principles to electricity staff.
Candidates are expected to be able to complete the seven tutor marked modules in about 7 to 12 months.
Candidates must submit at least one module in the first 12 months and should
be aware that if they have not completed the course after 2 years they will be
liable for additional fees should they wish to continue studying after this
time.
All materials are supplied on enrolment and the cost includes the
tutor marked assignments. The course fee
is currently £580 + VAT for UK candidates and £635 for overseas candidates.
