CLIMATE CHANGE – THE POWER INDUSTRY

EURELECTRIC, US power association EEI, the Japanese Federation of Electric Power Companies, the Canadian Electricity Association) and the Energy Association of Australia have jointly issued a Statement on a Future Climate Change Framework.

All four Power associations emphasise that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions must be addressed in the context of sustainable development and that, equally, all sources of electricity must be utilised to meet growing demand for power in the future. Recognising the role the power sector can play in mitigating climate change impact, they reiterate the industry’s intention to work to improve public and governmental understanding of the critical issues for the availability of reliable, sustainable and affordable electricity and sets out seven principles to guide future action: the need for a comprehensive global approach, without which it will be impossible to reduce long-term GHG emissions in a cost-effective manner; businesses need longer timelines and a coherent framework to operate;long-term international goals for reducing GHG emissions, and the rate of progress towards them, must be based on sound scientific and economic analyses; a market-based approach is most likely to provide cost-effective, efficient delivery of environmental goals; R&D and technology transfer & dissemination must be boosted; any emissions reductions framework should apply fairly to all sectors; and the need to encourage changes in customer behaviour.

NATIONAL OCCUPATIONAL STANDARDS

National Occupational Standards (NOS) are the first and last word in what an individual needs to know, do or understand in order to carry out a particular job effectively.  A new online directory - brought to you by the Skills for Business network - puts all NOS together in one place for the first time and for free.

The NOS directory can be found at www.ukstandards.org. Its ultimate aim is to provide a comprehensive resource to help raise performance in business, industry and the public sector.
