STUNNING A-LEVEL RESULTS
A-level results for eighteen year old school leavers in England and Wales are
taking forward the education revolution and opening up opportunity to more
pupils than ever before, Minister of State for School Standards David Miliband
announced on 19 August.
Mr
Miliband congratulated students on their success and thanked teachers and
support staff for their hard work in helping their pupils fulfil their
potential. Welcoming the results the Minister said:
“These results today show there is an education revolution underway in our
country that is opening up opportunities for more young people than ever. The
results are built on the hard work of students, schools and colleges. I
congratulate the students and thank our teachers for their commitment. My
message to them is simple: Don’t let anyone tell you that standards have
dropped because more of you have done well, this is simply a myth. Your hard
work has merited success.”
This
year’s results show:
-
For those completing their A levels, the overall pass rate rose to 96% from
95.4% last year
-
Agrades at A-level increased by 0.8 percentage points to 22.4%
-
The overall AS pass rate has increased by 0.2 percentage points to 86.9%

OLYMPIC EDUCATIONAL IDEAS
Schools Minister Stephen Twigg is backing a series of Olympic
themed activities which summer schools can use to raise young peoples interest
in foreign languages, other cultures and sport.
What are the words to the different national anthems that will be played in
Athens when the Olympic winners head to the podium to collect their medals?
What is the shortest journey to Athens to see the event?
These are some of the questions that children may be answering in Local
Education Authority run summer schools in London’s five Olympic boroughs. The
Government is also distributing the activities to all London boroughs and is
publishing them on the web (www.dfes.gov.uk/languages) to encourage other
holiday schemes to take advantage of the Olympics and use it as a theme for
education and enjoyment. The Olympic activities have been adapted from a
series of lesson plans that used the recent Euro 2004 championship as a theme
to channel children’s enthusiasm for sport into learning about other
countries’ cultures and languages.
