NATIONAL SKILLS ACADEMIES UK
At
Skills Summit 2005 on 13 July, Secretary of State for Education and Skills,
Ruth Kelly, announced the publication of a Prospectus describing the
Government’s vision for a new network of National Skills Academies, an
innovative approach to meeting employers’ needs for training. The Prospectus
invites expressions of interest from employers and Sector Skills Councils to
create four National Skills Academies opening for business by September 2006.
The aim is have 12 National Skills Academies in place by 2008. Over time
there will be a National Skills Academy for every major sector of the economy,
each sponsored by business and industry.
Information about National Skills Academies and how employers can become
engaged as sponsors, the timetable for the pathfinders, and for an expression
of interest form,
is available on the DfES Website.
AFAQ-ETA Comment
It seems to us that this initiative should be grasped by the UK power sector,
since it already has in place some of the features of a National Skills
Academy such as a network of training providers, a CoVE Training Centre,
recognised apprenticeship schemes, a recognised qualifications framework, a
sector supported Power Academy and more. It is clear that industry and sector
skills councils are at the centre of this development. It will be interesting
to see the first twelve sectors that succeed in implementing this initiative.

The Latest Merger
The parent body of AFAQ-ETA has recently merged with AFNOR, the French
Standards Body, to form a world class standardisation, certification and
training organisation.
The merger recognises the synergies between the two organisations. Both are
major players with international recognition, sharing common values and
missions.
So far as AFAQ-ETA is concerned it will bring the opportunity to offer courses
and services to over 20 subsidiaries all over the world. It also means that
we may well rebrand to AFAQ AFNOR International (A2i) early next year. In
terms of our relationships with existing clients it will be business as usual!
Become a Quality Management Systems Expert!
We have
just produced a new 5 day ISO 9000:2000 IRCA Registered Lead Auditor/Auditor
QMS course. Gone are the days of lectures and countless power point slides.
In its place is an activity based blended learning solution, which is still
mindful of the need to pass the end IRCA examination. The course is now
enjoyable! The first of these new styled programmes will take place at our
London offices between 3 and 7 October.

But I haven’t got time to go on a course!
Tyla
Davis is in the process of producing two new exciting interactive CD open
learning courses covering the ISO 9000 series of standards and the ISO
auditing standard 19011. This is a detailed but fun way of finding out
about these standards. The courses are far beyond an awareness level but they
are easy to follow and a perfect source of reference for both the
professional/ internal auditor and also for the quality manager in industry.
It means you can study in your own time, can revisit the learning at any time
and perhaps even become Lead Auditor qualified in a shorter time. It is also
an interesting way to fulfill CPD requirements. One feature of the courses is
self-testing quizzes to ensure you have understood each module.
